Carpe Diem? Really?
I started working my way upto the base of the hill that laid in front of me. There was a strip of sea water, some 500 meters of it between me and the hill but it was low tide, so the water was moving out. 'Ok, there's hardly 50 meters of water between me and the hill, i can swim through it,' i thought. The dry seabed was ridden with potholes, making it difficult for me to walk. Just as I reached the water line, my cell phone buzzed. 'We are going back to the hotel, come fast,' my friend on the other end replied. I had to reluctantly move back.
I could see the shack on the horizon where my friends were waiting for me. Another water line of around 500 meters loitered between me and the beach. The shack was around a kilometer across the beach. I could see the seabed through water. 'The water is shallow, it's hardly 500 meters, let's try going through this,' i thought. I started walking through the sea. The water was hardly upto my Ankles. I slowly went upto 100 meters in water. The beach was still around 3-400 meters away. And from nowhere, as I stepped my leg sanked. It went in till my knee sanked. I was flabbergasted.(Yes!! I finally got a chance to use this word). More like terrified. I was in the middle of nowhere and had no idea of where to proceed with my one leg stuck in sand on sea bed with a foot of water!!!
Till that moment, all day I was thinking of 'Carpe diem'. The term itself had prompted me to go on this little adventure of mine. Now I was cursing myself for believing on 'Carpe diem'. Seize the day? My foot. This is certificate of death day.
I somehow managed to pull my leg out. Okay, half job done, still need to figure out a way to get out of the sea. I put my right foot, albeit cautiously ahead and I was petrified, again. My foot sanked upto my thigh this time. There's no way I can get out of this sea without swimming, I thought. But I was carrying a bag full of perishables and a cell phone. Swimming was out of question. It took me 10 minutes just to figure out the next place to put my foot in. Fortunately, it remained at ankle level. I managed to get out of the sea after half an hour with my jeans wet upto my thighs. The calm and devil sea was behind me and the beach ahead laying there effortlessly.
'This is the best beach i have seen in my whole life, the water is so calm and shallow,' my friend chirped as I joined him in the shack. Little did he know that beyond that fake look was a devil lurking to kill people.
Carpe Diem it was for me. I seized my life that day.
Really flabbergasted !! Carpe Diem not always works😀😀.
